Synopsis
Lenny, a struggling
writer, is not dealing with the tragic death of his wife,
Trina, leaving Trisha, his eight-year-old daughter, to care
for herself and her younger brother, Chris. With Trina’s
death the “daemon” that guided Lenny’s work has also
abandoned him. While he attempts to dull his grief with
alcohol, a mysterious young woman emerges from the sea to
save Chris from drowning. Riddled with guilt, chastised by
his friend, Uncle Harry Cole, and intrigued by the young
woman, Lenny becomes determined to find her.
Her name is Kathleen.
But who is Kathleen? Is she a dream, a memory, a lovely
ghost from the past or has she stepped from another world
into the now? Lenny struggles to discover the answers to
these questions as Kathleen moves in and out of the life of
the family bringing with her both hope and magic. Trisha and
Chris accept her unconditionally while protective Uncle
Harry Cole has grave doubts about her motives and a strange
man lurks in the background.
Lenny experiences a
disappointing near-success with his writing while his friend
Dick, who often tries to coach Lenny on how to be
successful, plans to marry his new love, Alice. Meanwhile
Kathleen is going through her own metamorphosis, becoming
increasingly tied to the present and the family. When she
hears Dick and Alice’s news, wanting to be part of “both
worlds,” she convinces Lenny to sell her antique necklace to
pay for the wedding.
The climax occurs when
Windweather, a strange “minister,” shows up to perform the
ceremony. He displays an unexpected power over Kathleen that
forces her to face the most difficult decision she will ever
have to make.
